Let us start by saying, we totally get it! We know how hard it is to say goodbye to out our dogs when we drop them off for daycare or boarding. To them, your energy changed and they are reacting to that shift, which sometimes causes them to feel anxious, and then all the extra attention they are getting in that moment is only continuing to reinforce that state of nervousness. Although we may have the best intentions to make them feel better, we are keeping them in a nervous state of mind when we make saying goodbye a big deal. When a nervous dog gets integrated into a pack of dogs, the nervous dog’s energy causes the entire pack’s energy to shift. Unbalanced energy creates unbalanced energy. The absolute, best thing you can do for your dog when you’re dropping him or her off for boarding(or daycare, or training) is to make it as seamless as possible.
Here are our top tips for a smooth and stress-free drop-off.
Keep Goodbyes Short and Sweet
One of the most common mistakes owners make is lingering during drop-off.
While it's completely understandable to want one last cuddle, long emotional goodbyes can actually make your dog feel uncertain. Dogs are incredibly good at reading our emotions. If they sense that you're anxious, upset, or hesitant, they may start to feel that something is wrong.
Instead, aim for a calm and confident goodbye. A quick pat, a cheerful "See you later!" and then head off.
Your dog will often settle much faster once they realise the routine has begun.
Stay Positive
Dogs take their cues from us.
If you approach drop-off with excitement and confidence, your dog is more likely to view the experience positively. Try to avoid phrases such as "I'm so sorry" or "Don't be sad."
Instead, use an upbeat tone and treat the experience like any other fun outing.
Give Your Dog a Chance to Settle
Once you've left, your dog can focus on exploring their surroundings, meeting new friends, and settling into their new routine. Many dogs are so busy investigating all the exciting sights and smells that they quickly forget they were ever worried about being left behind.
Exercise Before Arrival (If Appropriate)
A gentle walk before daycare or boarding can help your dog arrive feeling relaxed and ready for the day.
There's no need to exhaust them, but allowing them to stretch their legs and go to the toilet before arriving can make the transition easier.
Make Sure We Know About Any Changes
If your dog has had an upset stomach, an injury, changes in medication, or anything unusual has happened recently, please let us know during drop-off.
The more information we have, the better we can care for your dog during their stay.
Trust the Process
It's completely normal to miss your dog while they're away. Many owners worry about how their dog will cope, especially during their first visit.
The reality is that most dogs settle much quicker than their owners expect. Once they're busy playing, exploring, napping, and enjoying plenty of attention, they often have a wonderful time.
At The Ruff Barn, our goal is to make every dog feel safe, comfortable, and part of the family while they're in our care.
Final Thoughts
The best drop-offs are calm, confident, and consistent.
A quick goodbye, a positive attitude, and trust in the process can help set your dog up for a successful day of daycare or a comfortable boarding stay.
